So you’ve made the decision to finally begin that home renovation project you’ve had your heart set on for all of these years. The question now isn’t whether or not you are going to go through with the project, but rather where to begin. The start of a home renovation project can feel simply overwhelming. There are many considerations and decision to be made along the way, but making wise choices from the outset will mean a smooth home project with a great end result. If you’ve recently decided to get a home project going but aren’t sure where to begin, we hope the following pointers will help you get off to a good start!

Here are the three major steps you can take to get your project off on the right foot:

Begin with the end in mind.

It’s incredibly important that you have a good grasp on what it is you would like for your home project to accomplish as soon as possible. For the sake of time, cost, and overall efficiency, knowing what you hope to achieve in the most detail possible from the outset is critical. Going into a home project with an “I’ll make up mind about what I want as I go” mentality will ultimately cause stress for you and those working to make your dream project a reality. Interview and hire the right people for the job.

This is one of the most critical choices you’ll make as you get your home project started! It’s incredibly important to hire designers and builders who have a good reputation, are trustworthy, and are known for doing quality work on schedule. Be sure to ask the right questions so that you can make the best, most informed decision when hiring for your job. You’ll need to decide whether you’ll contract out the job yourself or hire a design-build firm as well. Not sure which is the right choice for you? Read more about the design-build model here.

Set a desired budget and timeline.

To avoid frustration and surprise bills, have an idea of a budget and timeline you expect to be honored in mind when you meet with designers, builders, and/or contractors the first time you meet. You can always make changes along the way as you see fit, but getting everyone involved on the same page about your expectations in these areas from the beginning is a good idea.

Get a grasp on these three things, and your home project will be on its way! Deciding to pursue a home project is exciting, but can easily become overwhelming without the right planning and forethought. Knock out some of the larger, more important decisions during the first phase of planning for a more enjoyable home renovation experience.
